Talk title: “Lipid-based hybrid nanovectors as theranostic tools”

Gianni Ciofani (born on August 14th, 1982) is Associate Professor at the Polytechnic University of Torino, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (Torino, Italy) and Senior Researcher at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), Smart Bio-Interfaces Research Line (Pontedera, Pisa, Italy).

He received his Master Degree in Biomedical Engineering (with honors) from the University of Pisa, Italy, in July 2006, and, in the same year, his Diploma in Engineering (with honors) from the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa, Italy. In January 2010, he obtained his Ph.D. in Innovative Technologies (with honors) from the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna. From January 2010 to August 2013 he was Post-Doc at the IIT, Center for Micro-BioRobotics @SSSA, where, from September 2013 to October 2015, he was Researcher in the framework of the Smart Materials Platform. In October 2015 he was appointed Associate Professor at the Polytechnic University of Torino, maintaining his research activity in IIT where he is currently Principal Investigator of the Smart Bio-Interfaces Research Line.

His main research interests are in the field of smart nanomaterials for nanomedicine, bio/non-bio interactions, and biology in altered gravity conditions. He is coordinator or unit leader of many grants/projects, and in 2016 he was awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant. Gianni Ciofani is author of about 90 ISI papers (H-index 21, excluding self-citations), 2 edited books, 12 book chapters and 2 applications of international patents. He delivered about 15 invited talks/lectures in international contexts and, for his research activity, he was awarded several national and international prizes. He serves as Reviewer for more than 100 international journals, and is an Editorial Board Member of the International Journal of Biological Engineering, of Advances in Nano Research, and Senior Editor of Nanomaterials & Nanosciences.

Gianni Ciofani is professor of Biomimetic Systems and Bionanotechnologies, and supervisor of several M.Sc. and Ph.D. students.

Prof. Dr. Rawil Fakhrullin - Kazan Federal University, Republic of Tatarstan, Russian Federation
Talk title: “Recent advances in cell surface engineering”

Rawil F. Fakhrullin received his MSc from Kazan State University in 2003, later receiving a PhD in Biochemistry form Kazan State University (2006), and DSc in Microbiology from Kazan Federal University (2011). He also received an MSc degree in Chemistry with Nanotechnology from University of Hull, UK. He worked as a visiting scientist at the University of Hull (UK), University of Sheffield (UK) and Yeditepe University (Istanbul, Turkey). Currently, he is an Associate Professor at the Department of Microbiology and Bionanotechnology group leader . His research interests are focused on development of novel biomimetic materials (including functionalised cells), cell-based therapy, drug delivery, controllable assembly of living cells into multicellular clusters, fabrication of cell-based biosensors, and nanotoxicity.

Prof. Dr. Krijn P. de Jong - Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis; Utrecht University, Netherlands
Talk title: “Nanoscale Effects in Catalysis for Fuels and Chemicals”

Krijn P. de Jong received his BSc (1976), MSc (1978) and PhD (1982) in chemistry, all degrees cum laude at Utrecht University. In 1987 he obtained an MSc degree in chemical engineering from Twente University. From 1982-1997 he was with Shell Research working on catalyst preparation, heavy oil conversion, environmental processes, zeolite catalysis and synthesis gas production and conversion. In 1997 he was appointed as professor of inorganic chemistry and catalysis at Utrecht University. His research interests are catalyst synthesis, electron tomography of nanostructured catalysts, hydrocarbon conversions over zeolites, catalysts for liquid-phase catalysis, conversion of synthesis gas to fuels and chemicals and hydrogen storage. He has published about 250 scientific papers and 30 patents. He was the Scientific Director of the Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science of Utrecht University and is currently Vice-Head of the Department of Chemistry. He has received amongst others the Unilever Chemistry Award in 1977, Shell Patent Awards in 1987 and in 1991, an NWO TOP Research Grant in 2008, the Award for Excellence in Natural Gas Conversion in 2013, an ERC Advanced Grant in 2013 and he was elected as member of the European Academy of Sciences in 2015.

Prof. Dr. Gligor Jovanovski - Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts; Republic of Macedonia
Talk title: “Vibrational spectroscopy vs. X-ray diffraction in mineral identification – advantages and imperfections”

Gligor Jovanovski graduated chemistry in 1969 at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Skopje. In 1974 he obtained his master degree and in 1981 his PhD from the University of Zagreb. In 1971 he got the position of teaching assistant, and from 1982 to 2010 he was professor of physical chemistry at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Institute of Chemistry, Skopje. In 2006 he was elected a member of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Prof. Jovanovski has taught courses in Physical chemistry at the Faculty of Mining and Geology, Štip, and the Institute of Biology, as well as courses Structure of atoms and chemical bonds, Structure of molecules, Crystal chemistry, Diffraction methods for investigating crystals and Methodology of scientific method at the Institute of Chemistry, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Skopje. He is author of four monographs, editor of one monograph and co-author of three university textbooks.
The field of scientific interest of Prof. Jovanovski is in the area of X-ray structural analysis and vib­rational spectroscopy. He has published 205 papers (187 scientific and 18 professional) in 56 different journals and has had 221 presentations at scientific meetings. According to Science Citation Index (SCI), his scientific results have been cited around 2000 times. He has participated in 45 scientific projects. He has been editor-in-chief of the Bulletin of Chemists and Technologists of Macedonia, and now is a member of the Advisory Board of the Macedonian Journal of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and editor-in-chief of Contributions of MASA, Section of Natural, Mathematical and Biotechnical Sciences. Also, he is editor in three international journals in the area of chemistry. He has spent five years at renowned foreign universities.

He has been Dean and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Skopje, Head of the Institute of Chemistry, Secretary of the Section of Natural, Mathematical and Biotechnical Sciences at the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the member of the Presidency of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Talk title: “Efficient hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts and electrochemical testing techniques”

Gülfeza Kardas is a Professor of Chemistry Department at Çukurova University in Turkey. She received both her B.S. degree in Chemistry (1993) and her PhD degree in Physical Chemistry (1999) from Çukurova University. Her professional interests include electrochemical hydrogen production, photoelectrochemical hydrogen production, fuel cells, Li-air battery, conducting polymers and corrosion. She has published more than 70 papers. The focus of her laboratory is electrode materials for battery and electrolysis system and corrosion of metals.

Prof. Dr. Andre Skirtach - Department of Molecular Biotechnology, Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Ghent University, Belgium.
Talk title: “Stimuli responsive polyelectrolytes in polymeric capsules: principles and applications.”

Andre Skirtach received B. Sc., M. Sc. (equivalent) degree from Moscow State University of Lomonosov, Russia in 1993 and Ph. D. degree from McGill University, Montréal, Québec, Canada in 1997. Subsequently, he joined the National Research Council of Canada (Conseil national de recherches du Canada) in Ottawa, Ontario as an Associated Research Officer. In 2000, Dr. Skirtach and colleagues transferred to industry technology developed at NRC-CNRC and founded a prominent start-up - Trillium Phot., Inc. Subsequently, he moved to Max-Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, Golm, Germany, later on becoming a Group Leader in the Department of Interfaces. Since 2011, Dr. Skirtach has become Professor at the Department of Molecular Biotechnology at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Ghent University, Belgium.

Talk title: “Stimuli responsive polyelectrolytes in polymeric capsules: principles and applications.”

Abstract:  Polyelectrolyte multilayer capsules are finding an increasing number of applications in various areas, especially in bio-medicine. They are constructed by consecutively applying alternatively charged polyelectrolyte polymers and are known for possibilities of incorporation of materials of choice in their shell, including organic molecules, polymers, and inorganic nanoparticles. Alternatively charged polyelectrolytes respond to stimuli making these polymers particularly attractive for developing elaborate encapsulation methods and inducing controlled release – functionalities sought in bio-medical applications. The basics of stimuli responsive polyelectrolytes will be discussed in this presentation, while a range of biomedical applications: from encapsulation and preservation of enzymes to intracellular and in-vivo release of biomolecules will be presented.

Talk title: “Temperature-responsive grafted polymer brushes with different mechanisms of action: molecular design, fabrication and application”

Yurij Stetsyshyn is Associate Professor at the Lviv Polytechnic National University, Department of Organic Chemistry (Lviv, Ukraine). He graduated biology in 2001 at the I. Franko National University (Lviv, Ukraine), Department of the Genetic and Biotechnology. In 2005 he obtained his PhD from the Lviv Polytechnic National University. Dr. Stetsyshyn has taught courses in Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry at the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, Lviv Polytechnic National University. He received a grant of President of Ukraine for young scientists twice, is co-author of two textbooks.
In 2015 he received award polish universities named after hetman Ivan Vyhovsky aimed to mark the services of Ukrainian citizens in development of science and culture, civil society and building democratic Ukraine that is directed towards Europe, connecting the best historical traditions as well as the old, present and future relations of democratic Ukraine with Poland and Europe.
He is interested in researches involving fabrication, study and application of grafted polymer brushes, development of nanostructured, biocompatible, biomimeting and sensitive polymer systems, bionanotechnology etc.

Prof. Dr. Radmila Tomovska - Universidad del País Vasco/Euskal Herriko Unvertsitatea (UPV-EHU), Spain
Talk title: “Polymer-polymer and polymer-graphene nanostructured particles”

Radmila Tomovska obtained the BS in chemical engineering, MS and PhD in chemistry from the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy, University St Cyril and Methodius, Skopje, Macedonia. She realized her postdoctoral stay in the Institute of Chemical Process Fundamentals of Czech Academy of Sciences in a field of laser chemistry under NATO postdoc fellowship. Currently she works as Ikerbasque Researcher Professor at the POLYMAT Institute, University of the Basque Country, Spain. She is engaged in the investigation in the area of (photo)polymerization in dispersed systems and synthesis of novel polymer and composite nanostructured particles for application in waterborne coatings, paints and adhesives, but as well in preparation of composite structures for application in gas sensors and for CO2 capture and conversion. Her research is funded by regional, national and international public agencies and by industry (she is a member of scientific committee of Industrial Liaison Program in "Polymerization in Dispersed Media"). She is coauthor of about 50 publications, from which one review article and 5 chapters of book.

Associate Prof. Dr. Serdar Durdagi - Bahcesehir University, Turkey
Talk title: “Successful Examples of Molecular Modeling-Experiment Integration on Novel Drug Designing Studies”

We are applying computational chemistry methods to biological systems in our research group. Our inter-disciplinary research focuses on protein engineering and analyses of their structural/functional dynamics, ligand- and structure-based drug design, high throughput virtual screening, investigation of molecular mechanisms of protein/drug, protein/protein and protein/DNA interactions and optimizations protocols for rational drug design. For this aim, together with applications of molecular modeling tools such as homology modeling, 3D-QSAR (quantitative structure-activity relationships), molecular docking, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations combined with post-processing analyses (using MM/PB(GB)SA as well as direct evaluation of Free Energy Perturbation (FEP) with constraining schemes, and Potential of Mean Force (PMF) computations), cheminformatics, Monte-Carlo simulations, loop modeling, de novo drug design, ADME/Tox; we are also developing programing codes for several biological problems. 

Principal Investigator (PI) of the group, Prof. Durdagi published one book on computer-aided drug design in 2010 (“Recent Advances in Computational Drug Design Studies: The Application of In Silico Methodologies for Bioactive Cannabinoid and Fullerene Derivatives” by VDM-Verlag). Prof. Durdagi is the author/co-author of seven book chapters (such as “Medicinal Chemistry Research Progress”, published by Nova Science and "Highlights in Computational Chemistry II” published by Springer) and more than 100 research articles in top peer-reviewed medicinal chemistry, computational chemistry, quantum chemistry, bioinformatics, structural biology, bioorganic chemistry, biophysics and computational biology journals (i.e. Journal of Medicinal Chemistry (ACS); Journal of Biological Chemistry; European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry; Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling (ACS); Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (JPET); BBA-Biochimica et Biophysica Acta-Biomembranes; Current Medicinal Chemistry; Journal of Computer Aided Molecular Design; Journal of Molecular Modeling; Int. Prof. Durdagi’s research group currently works at the School of Medicine of the Bahcesehir University. The group of Dr Durdagi works on several projects for better understanding the drug-receptor and protein-protein, protein-DNA interactions of different systems using several computational modeling approaches and designing novel therapeutic compounds.
